Cataract Center and Presbyopia Vision Center

Cataract patients now have the option to have their vision corrected to allow them to see at both near and far distances after cataract surgery! These lens implants provide significantly reduced dependence on glasses for all tasks of daily living, providing a range of focus that laser vision correction cannot achieve. Individuals with visual impairment suffering from cataracts previously had only a mono-focal lens implant option after surgery.

Cosmetic Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or commonly known as an “eyelid lift,” is a surgical procedure remove excess skin and fat of the eyelids. With age, the facial skin gradually droops. Excess skin on the upper eyelid can form a ’hood’, which hangs from the upper eyelid to the point of resting on the lashes. Excess skin and fat on the lower eyelid can lead to a ’baggy’ appearance.

Modern blephaoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed in office or in a minor operating room depending on the complexity of the surgery. At DuPage Ophthalmology, Dr. Gupta is our oculoplastic specialist. He has over 15 years of experience of performing blepharoplasty and other eyelid plastic procedures. Careful consultation in regard to patient’s needs and expectations, along with meticulous surgical techniques and attentive postoperative follow-up, are the key ingredients to a successful surgical outcome. Whether it is for better appearance or to improve visual function, blepharoplasty can make a positive impact on patient’s lifestyle and self-image.

Frequently Asked Questions about Blepharoplasty

How common is this?

Droopy eyelid skin is nearly universal as time goes on since the highly mobile eyelid skin sags and falls as we get older.

How do I know if I have droopy eyelid skin?

Your eyes will narrow and people may tell you that you look angry, upset or tired. Some people use their forehead muscles to keep the eyelids open which can cause headaches. Other people lift up their chin which stresses the neck.

How is droopy eyelid skin treated?

Surgery is an excellent way to reverse these changes. It is the third most common cosmetic procedure for both men and women. Surgery is outpatient, takes about one hour, performed under mild sedation, and is successful over 90% of the time.

Risks include bleeding, infection, undercorrection, overcorrection, and asymmetry. The eyelids may be swollen and bruised for 2 weeks (it looks like a black eye). This is because of the rich blood supply in the area. However, this also means that the incision heals quickly and with a low risk of scarring.

Is it painful in the recovery period?

There is generally minimal discomfort afterwards. Ice packs and Tylenol are the only things needed by most patients.

Does insurance cover the cost of surgery?

Ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelids rather than the skin around the eyelids. Medicare and private insurance does cover the cost of surgery if the ptosis is bad enough. This can be shown by computerized testing, photographs, and an eye exam.

Removing excess skin or eyebrow surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure and is NOT covered by insurance. Removal of the skin and fat is called blepharoplasty.
