Cataract Center and Presbyopia Vision Center

Cataract patients now have the option to have their vision corrected to allow them to see at both near and far distances after cataract surgery! These lens implants provide significantly reduced dependence on glasses for all tasks of daily living, providing a range of focus that laser vision correction cannot achieve. Individuals with visual impairment suffering from cataracts previously had only a mono-focal lens implant option after surgery.

Low Vision Evaluation

Low vision evaluation and rehabilitation is a unique service that is available to our patients, as low vision service is customarily not a part of a regular ophthalmic or optometric practice. At DuPage Ophthalmology, we aim to treat the full spectrum of eye patients from those striving to achieve 20/20 vision through laser vision correction to those striving to lead a fulfilling lifestyle despite having severe visual handicaps.

In the United States, legal blindness is defined as having vision of 20/200 in patient’s better eye with the best possible correction (glasses or contact lenses) or as having visual field (peripheral vision) less than 20 degrees. As frequently misunderstood, only a person, not an eye, can be legally blind. Legal blindness is the only physical handicap that is a tax deduction, which can be claimed on the United States federal income tax return.

Traditionally, low vision evaluation is performed on patients who are legally blind. Modern low vision rehabilitation has advanced much in recent years, and recently, low vision services have been extended to patient with vision as good as 20/70 to 20/80. Low vision evaluation is performed most frequently on those with macular degeneration and glaucoma, since they are the most common causes of legal blindness in the United States. However, low vision service is equally applicable to any other causes of profound visual loss (such as retinitis pigmentosa), regardless of age.

Low vision evaluation and rehabilitation is a lengthy process, which has to be tailored to the visual limitations, the visual needs, and the lifestyle unique to each patient. The initial consultation typically takes about an hour, and subsequent follow-up visits are frequently necessary. In order to improve the lives of low vision patients, the low vision specialist not only has to be knowledgeable in the physical aspects of low vision but also has to be cognizant of the psychological impact and lifestyle challenges from having low vision.

At DuPage Ophthalmology, Dr. Manastersky heads our low vision service. Dr. Manastersky is a top graduate from Illinois College of Optometry, and she has completed one year of postgraduate training in low vision evaluation and rehabilitation. She has extensive clinical experience in low vision and has studied and worked with some of the best low vision experts in the Chicago area.
